Billy's Wish
Billy’s wish was to have a traditional fiesta in his home and invite all of his family to celebrate. Billy has a very large family. He is one of 10 kids and has 5 children and 9 grandchildren. He is very close to his 3 sisters, Betty (82), Margie (78) and Jenny (72); all who lived close; however, due to decline in health and limited finances, they don’t get together as often as they would like.
Billy served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Following his service, he worked in iron and metal work and when he grew older, he helped raise his grandchildren so that his children could go to school and/or work. Now, as he suffers from advanced dementia, his daughter, Catalina has assumed primary care in her home. Recently admitted to hospice services, she acknowledges her father’s time is limited. She continues, “My Father often worries about his family and talks often about wanting to see them.” Catalina is unable to get her Father out of the house to visit family and does not have the resources to put together a party on her own. She stated, “This family get together would be so positive for my Father. He could have the closure he needs.”
On December 28, 2013, Bucket List Foundation threw a FIESTA for Billy and 30+ guests! BLF Volunteers decorated their home and backyard from top to bottom in traditional fiesta style with maracas, hanging lanterns, balloons, a piñata and a full Mexican food buffet. The celebration wouldn’t be complete without music! Mariachi Luna de Mexico comprised of a 6-piece band from trumpets to guitars and the sweet and powerful voice of Berta serenaded Billy and his guests to some of his favorite ballads. Most importantly, Billy was reunited with family from near and far who came out to share in his special day. There were tears of joy when he saw each one. It was a celebration to remember!
Following the wish, his daughter wrote to say, “What an awesome display of what you started as an act of love for this forgotten generation. You had this vision to grant a wish and as a result my family was overjoyed to see what they needed to be doing. They will be paying it forward as they were touched by the generous efforts your Foundation made. Thank you!”
